Junior Kindergarten

The Junior Kindergarten program at Reveille is designed for children who could benefit from an extra year of focused support and a possible longer day as they prepare for Kindergarten.  The class meets from either 9:00 am-12:00 pm or 9:00 am-2:00 pm, Monday-Friday.

Our Junior Kindergarten objective is to cultivate skills essential for success in Kindergarten and beyond.  Within this play-based class, students build awareness of self and community, develop independence and confidence, and are exposed to early literacy, mathematical and science concepts. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are supported and fostered through daily open play and readiness activities.

Instructional resources include: Words Their Way Sound Sorts; Learning Without Tears (letter and numeral recognition and formation); High-frequency emergent level sight word readers; print-rich environment; games and fingerplays for phonetic awareness; and directed drawing.

The Junior Kindergarten class also enjoys special experiences like a field trip to the VMFA, caroling at the UMC Women’s Luncheon, a teddy bear clinic, the JK art show, and a 100 Days of School Gross Motor Celebration.
